The Presidential Election Debate between Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Mirhossein Mousavi

The presidential election debate between Ahmadinejad and his reformist rival, Mirhossein Mousavi, that was broadcast live at 10:30 p.m. local time on 3 June 2009 on national television turned into one the most important events of the contemporary history of Iran. This was the first time that a current president attended a presidential election debate. During this debate, high authorities of the Islamic Republic, Hashemi Rafsanjani, Nateq Noori and Mohamad Khatami where all verbally attacked by Ahmadinejad, whilst Mousavi simply criticized Ahmadinejad and his Government’s operation. Based on the statement by the Secretary of Election Committee of Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) an audience of 50 million in Iran and 150 million people worldwide watched this debate on TV.
